I am pleased to announce the restart of our Developmental Reading Groups (DRG) Program today. This program involves children working with other students of a similar level of reading development being presented with work at a level at which they can achieve success and demonstrate growth.
The program will operate for an hour each day from Monday to Thursday and include all students from Year 1 to Year 6, with literacy groups within each of the 3 blocks (Forrest - Yr 1 & Yr 2, Jacoby - Yr 3 & Yr 4 and O’Connor - Yr 5 & Yr 6).
Students have been placed into one of these groups based upon their developmental level as determined by standardised test data and teacher judgements (eg: grades). Teachers have been allocated to these groups and will focus on the specific needs of the children in each group. This will mean that a child’s DRG teacher may be different to their regular classroom teacher.
While the DRG program provides students at all levels of development with benefits from working with their peers, it also provides specific additional support for lower achieving students through lower group numbers and extra EA support. There will also be opportunities through the year for students to move to different groups based upon teacher judgements following regular reviews of the groupings.
If any parent would like further information regarding our DRG program, I encourage you to speak to your child's teacher or I would be happy to discuss it with them on the telephone or in person at school.
